The most important thing that can learned about HTML is - to HAVE FUN! So
often people take up hobbies, only to find that their passion turns into
work, and they forget that they are having fun at what they are doing.
Don't let this happen to YOU!
All titles, text, graphs and images should be of value and descriptive in
nature.
Use good grammer. Don't forget to spill check your documents.
Don't use "Click here"... it assumes the user is ignorant. Instead, try using
buttons labled something like Next, Home, and Previous.
Add alternate text for images, just in case the user's browser doesn't load
images.
Always provide warning when loading a large files, such as graphics.
*Note any files 20 KB or larger should be considered large. There is a good
reason for this rule: Not everyone on the web has a high speed internet
connection. Those who are dialing up at 56K or slower have a hard time loading
large pictures and files. If your file is bigger than 20K, the reader's
internet connection may time out before the file is even loaded! Not to
mention that the larger the files, the more hard drive space it takes up on
your ISP's ( internet service provider ) server. Be considerate to others on
the web. Unless your picture MUST be larger than 20K, keep it small.
Follow all Copyright laws and Standards.
Cutting and pasting graphics, text, or music from someone else's web page may
break copyright laws and you could be fined!
Use a good style guide as your role model.
Find a web page you like. Look closely at how it is organized. Try to copy
it's professional look. We learn by watching and imitating others.
Break your information down into smaller pages. Information is easier to
swallow in small bytes.
Test your work, preferably on several browsers, which brings up another
point...
Beware
, not all
Browsers
are created equal.
What looks great in Internet Exploder might look awful in Netscrape. You've
got to test it on both to know how your viewer will see the page. Also, not
everyone has a 17 inch monitor. I write my pages to look good in 800x600
pixels, and to retain the same format when viewed on a larger screen. Until
the folks in Burzekistan have T1 lines and 36 inch computer monitors, we have
to accomodate them too!
